Lazy copies

Should I be flattered or annoyed? The first two photos are my original designs which I sold a lot of last year on Etsy.  The other photos I came across on Etsy today and are dolls produced by other people - that are, in my opinion - lazy copies.   Am I alone in getting cross about this sort of thing?  Thankfully I no longer sell or I could get really upset!

I am so much happier now I have switched to dolls houses.  My latest project is coming on slowly but surely.  And nothing it is has been copied!!

  1. Is the person who made the copies selling them? Oh my ... this is a very nasty behavior. :(

  2. I know you must feel annoyed at these copies, but, my goodness-there is just no comparison to your gorgeous work and beautiful little dolls. I think the least that person (or people) could do is to give you credit for the original design. And maybe a little note of thanks to YOU would be kind. Very poor copies they are indeed!! I would much rather have the original!!! (Do any of "those" actually sell??)

  3. It makes me mad when I see people copying, not "inspired-by" but direct copies. Happens to me all the time. Your dollies are so much nicer you have to feel a bit sorry for the person who is making poor imitations that they have no imagination and no artistic ability to create their own.

    1. Oh Susan you have my sympathy if this happens to you too. At least I am no longer selling dolls. You are right there is such a difference between being inspired and directly copying. Even the heart shape button on the collar is copied! Oh well. Thank goodness for minis where we all inspire each other but come up with very different interpretations. Off to visit your blog now!

    2. It's such a shame that people can't come up with their own ideas. I don't show new designs at my blog any more.

  4. You are so right, they are lazy copies. You are apparently not the only one to be copied, it is something that really makes you mad. These people have no respect.

  5. I think you have every right to be annoyed. If these were pictures on a blog of someone trying to make something inspired by you and not for sale it might be different-but even then I think a person should try to make something their own rather than completely copy someone else's work. The fact that they are exactly like yours and for sale is just pure laziness- you are correct there. I agree with RetroSandie though- there is no comparison---yours are much nicer and show your hard work and love poured into them. It's really sad how often this happens to artist's that I know. I would say 100% of the time the work that is copied is done by someone that works very, very hard to think up original, quality work-and not for much profit. The copiers are just slapping the original artist in the face when they sell that artist's sweat and care. Sorry about the long comment- kinda got on a soapbox there :)

  6. Is there nothing at all you can do to show they have plagiarized your work? Because that is exactly what they have done. I'm so sorry for you. I guess anything that each person creates is at risk of being copied. And what Susan says about inspiration is so true. This wasn't inspired - this was outright copying!

    1. I contacted one of these people. She claimed she had not intentionally copied my dolls and would remove it from her shop if it upset me. She did - and immediately replaced it with another one!!! She currently has three for sale all based on my design.

  7. Wow... I am so glad I read these. I was searching for your web site due to one of your pictures of Christmas elves from 2009. I love them!! I am an art elf of sorts as an aid in an art classroom and was searching Christmas crafts on Pinterest. Well my intention was to find out how you made them... to copy!!! Not for sale of course but to make with my kiddos at home. I am so sorry this would be offensive to you. My intention was that you had a lovely idea and I wanted to learn from you. With your permission I would love to attempt these for myself. I understand if you do not wish to share that information. I guess my reason for commenting is this... Of course people should site you as their inspiration, especially if they are selling them. However, how cool is it that people LOVE your work and want to imitate you. I assure you it is NOT my intention to offend but to offer a positive look on those lazy immitations. Sincerely, Maryann

    1. I too have been considering an attempt at these little dolls. Not to sell, but to make with my daughter. She is 13 and involved in so many activities that we wanted something small to represent each one. We are extremely crafty, but really lack creativity. :(
