Goodbye little Phoebe

Four years ago we adopted two little rescue kittens who we named Phoebe and Hobbes.  Phoebe was very much my cat and I really loved her.  She has featured here in some previous posts.  She loved the dolls house.

Last year an elderly neighbour started to encourage Phoebe into her house.  I visited this woman on many occasions and begged her to stop trying to steal Phoebe.  She was very difficult to deal with.  Eventually she agreed that she would ‘mist’ Phoebe with water from a spray ‘mister’ to discourage her.  But this was a lie.  She continued to take Phoebe into her house and told me that to spray her with water was the cruellest thing she ever heard and she would not do it.

Phoebe wore a collar with a magnet on it to allow her enter our house through the cat flap.  I saw Phoebe at our front door a couple of months ago with her collar on but the magnet had been carefully removed.  I was very upset and bought her a new one and a little identity ‘barrel’ in which I put a note which said ‘I have a loving home.  Do not steal me’ and our telephone number.

Last Monday night I was in Vienna (attending to some rather difficult family business) when I got a phone call from my son.  He had been telephoned by the local vet to say that some old woman had brought Phoebe in to be ‘put down’.  This witch claimed that Phoebe was her cat.  The vet opened the identity barrel and found our message.  He was furious with her for pretending she was Phoebe’s owner and told her he would have to contact us immediately.  My poor son had to phone me to tell me that Phoebe was extremely ill, in pain and would have to be put down immediately.  Obviously he wanted to get my view on this.  I am so sad.  Little Phoebe did not deserve her life to end this way.  Evidently this vile woman was feeding Phoebe with food that was not suitable for cats and the little animal got all kinds of diseases and a tumour.

I am still trying to come to terms with how someone can be so cruel as to steal someone’s much loved pet, neglect it and then secretly take it off to be killed.  Unfortunately the vet told me that this was not the first cat that this woman had stolen.

What a sad end for my little Phoebe.  I am so sad that was not able to say goodbye or stroke her little head to comfort her on her last night. You will be missed my gentle, loving little friend.

  4. Oh my, what a pity!! Poor Phoebe!!
We usually think that witches are only in tales, but they exist in real life too...
They are bad people (not ill people!!) who live to damage defenseless being.
But "evil comes to him who evil does", so I am sure someday life will give her the reward she deserves.
I love animals (specially cats), and I am very sad with Phoebe's story. She was a very very pretty cat, and I am sorry for your loss.
    Love,

  7. So sad. I am sorry to hear this. I had a neighbor that used to feed my cat and let her in when I was little. One time I told her to "get her own cat"! Fortunately, I don't think my lady was bad, just want a cat sometimes. I don't know why people can be like that. Her pictures are beautiful.

  9. I am so sorry to read this! And I am so sorry for you. There are so many homeless cats around why can't she adopt one of them? Although maybe it is not the best idea for any cats...
    Hugs to you

  10. Oh my gosh- I am crying reading this! Whatever is wrong with her!!!! I am soo sorry- I have kitty family members myself and I know the devastation you must feel. I think it is so sad that when humans are cruel to animals over and over again there is nothing the law can do to them. I think she should spend some time in jail. My heart goes out to you- sending you a hug ♥

  12. Oh Carol I'm so sorry but there must be something you can do such as telling the authorities and maybe the vet could help as well. My thoughts are with you.

  13. Carol, How terrible! Can't charges be pressed on this woman? Poor Phoebe is right. She was a darling Kitten! I am so sorry that this happened to you. I had something similar happen to me years ago. My daughter had a wonderful cat that disappeared for about three weeks. It turned out that some neighbors had him and decided to have him neutered.......he returned home to us after that operation.... they came over and asked for him back saying that they were moving and wanted to take him with them. I explained that he was my daughter's pet. I couldn't believe it. They then wanted me to reimburse them for the operation which I refused....it wasn't my idea to do that. They finally moved away without the cat. People have nerve!

  15. Hello Carol, what I've read your blog I was really shocked. I can not believe that there are people so despicable, but the vet can not complain since it was not the first time?
Anyway, I'm so sorry, I have a dog for 13 years, I love him as a member of the family, because he is a member of the family, I understand your pain and I am close with all my heart.

  16. All your kind words mean so much. When I feel stronger I may take this further. In the meantime I am making sure she does not get her hands on our other little cat. Thank you for your support and understanding. It is good to know there are so many kind and loving people out there. Carol

  17. Carol, reading this makes someone so sad and angry the same time! I´m so sorry for your little cat. Some years ago we had also neighbours that "stole" our cat by taking her inside for days. We lost that cat, too but at least my neighbours treated her nice and she died of age. I just hope that you will find ways to make that public so that people get cautios with that witch! Hugs, Sandra

  18. Carol,
I am so sorry to read about your little 'Phoebe'!! There has to be a special place in hell for people that hurt animals!! I agree that you should make the name of this woman public so that she doesn't hurt any other animals.
    All the best.
    Hugs,
    Sandi

  22. My goodness, this is just horrible! I hope some action can be taken against that woman, because what she did is horrible and it's unbelievable that she's done it before! I just feel so sad for Phoebe. I'm so sorry for your loss. =(

  23. I am shocked and saddened by your story. Poor little Phoebe! Surely this horrible woman can be prosecuted. I live in the United States, and cruelty to animals is against the law. Can it be possible that that's not also the case in Ireland? I hope not.

  24. Well Carol, this story brought a big lump to my throat and I've kept thinking about it all day. It is horrendous how people can be like that and we are powerless to do anything about them. They are few and far between thank goodness but that is no comfort to you or your sweet Phoebe. Thinking of you, Eli x

  27. This is beyond horrible. I am crying for you and your sweet cat, Carol. I don't even know what else to say--and for you to go though this while dealing with the difficult family matters elsewhere just makes it so much worse. You will be in my prayers.

  29. Carol, my heart is broken for you and your dear little Phoebe. What a sweet face. My eyes are still wet with tears, for I, myself, have two precious kitties of my own and I know that I would be totally crushed should anything happen to them. This story is horrendous! I agree with the other bloggers, this individual should be STOPPED. She is a serial-killer still on the loose. Ghastly. I wrap my arms around you and give you a the warmest of hugs.
